The restoration works, which has started by the placement of the first tile on the roof of the historical market by Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir, has been initiated on the roof.

The restoration works of 554-year Grand Bazaar, which is visited by 92 million people in a year, have been initiated on the roof.  After the completion of the restoration works project started in 2009, the first tile was placed on the roof of Grand Bazaar by Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir and Chairman of the Board of Historical Grand Bazaar Ahmet Kökler by a ceremony held today. The restoration of Grand Bazaar, which is built on 48 acres, is estimated to take approximately 10 years. According to today's cost, the restoration works are expected to cost about 200 million liras. Approximately 1 million 500 thousand pantiles will be used in the roof restoration which is estimated to be completed in December in 2017. İSKİ (Istanbul Water and Sewage Administration) will perform a work of 35 million liras for the infrastructure of Grand Bazaar.

In the ceremony, Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir spoke about the restoration works started. Indicating that they are experiencing an important moment for Istanbul, Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir said “I can say that I am experiencing a very important moment for us and Istanbul. We started this work in 2009. It was surely a dream. It was a dream we started by dreaming of the current situation. In 2009, we started the relievo restoration project studies of an area of approximately 110,000 square meters for Grand Bazaar and its surrounding along with its 21 han. Of course, renovation boards have been faced with such a large project for the first time. Actually, we have encountered problems from time to time during the process. We have divided the restoration of Grand Bazaar into 3 main sections. The first of these is the works for the roof, as we see now, the second is the infrastructure and the third one is the works to strengthen the market's carriers. We have gone out to tender after the restoration project on the roof of Grand Bazaar was also approved by the board in the past months. The tender was finalized as of April, and we have ensured the place supply. As of today, we are launching our works. The aim is that all problems of the roof will have been finished and renovated in December in 2017.

In our discussions with metropolitan municipality during this process, they are also performing a study for the infrastructure at the moment. The work to be performed for infrastructure by İSKİ has been approved by the Council of Monuments. The shopkeepers of Grand Bazaar will never be negatively affected by the ongoing works on the roof and infrastructure, and the shops will continue to work. Both sides of Grand Bazaar will not be restored at the same time. The intervention will be applied for the places that need urgent intervention. Later, the restoration of other places will be started gradually."

END OF VISUAL POLLUTION!

Also providing technical information about Grand Bazaar, Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir said, “The roof is an area of 39,000 square meters. The area of Grand Bazaar with its hans is 110,000 square meters. I hope that we will make free the area of 39,000 square meters from cables, air conditionings, television antennas and all things outside that you see. They will be within an order.”

Indicating that all works in Grand Bazaar may take 10 years and approximately 200 million liras will be spent, Mayor Demir said, “So far, 30 million liras have been spent regarding the project. It took place a tender of 10 million pounds for an area of 39,000 - square meters. The works to be performed for infrastructure by İSKİ will cost about 35 million liras. Regarding restoration, we are estimating a cost of 200 million liras that will cover the whole. Shopkeepers will not be affected by the restoration works. I can easily say that we are now in a very advanced level regarding restoration works. Consider that we started the project in 2009. We place the first tile in 2016. More than six years have passed. The restoration will easily exceed 10 years when we consider that its project took 6 years.” After the speeches, Mayor Demir expressed his thanks and also Chairman of the Board of Grand Bazaar Ahmet Kökler thanked Mayor of Fatih Mustafa Demir as he has worked and started Grand Bazaar restoration project for many years with great devotion.
