Muharrem Kasapoğlu, Minister of Youth and Sports visited the students attending the summer sports schools by the mobile pools organized jointly with Fatih Municipality under the project “Let’s Teach Everyone How to Swim”.

Visiting Kadırga Technical and Industrial Vocational High School, Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu and Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan received a lot of attention from the students.

Mentioning that Turkey is rich in terms of water resources and has the youngest population in Europe, Minister Kasapoğlu said, “Our purpose is to introduce young persons to sports and to provide them with all the means they need. To turn not just young people but our entire society into one that does sports. We call this extending sport to the base of the society. Hopefully we are extending our goals further day by day within the scope of our policy of extending sports to the base”.

Kasapoğlu mentioned that they quickly exceeded their goal of teaching 100,000 persons how to swim in 100 days and said, “This showed us that we need to raise the bar and so we thought ‘Let’s Teach Everyone How to Swim’. Hopefully we’ll teach 1 million persons how to swim until the end of 2020. This project is open for everyone who would like to learn how to swim. Municipalities play a major role in this regard. For us, municipalities make a very important business partner. The project you see here is realized jointly with Fatih Municipality for this common objective. In this sense, I’m thankful to our Municipality Mayor and to his team. They took swift action, have been very practical and we have taught over 4,000 young persons in 5 schools how to swim in the matter of just 2 months.

Mentioning that they receive very positive feedback from students and parents, Minister Kasapoğlu said, “Hopefully we’re in this together, we’ll make sports prominent not just in swimming but in many branches and will let it overcome all bad habits. We’ll become a healthy society in our body and in mind. We’ll also raise champions here who will make us proud in the international arena and who will let our crescent and star flag rise high in the skies. We talked to the families. You can read their excitement and joy on their faces. I also told them this: We’ll teach how to swim not just to children but also to parents. We’ll introduce everyone to water. Recently we signed the protocol for indoor pools together with our mayor. We’ll use our active pools more efficiently. Our mayor commenced construction of the pools forthwith. We’ll complete them as well and will become a society that does sports 7/24, every day of the year. Initiating this venture in Fatih is another source of happiness for myself”.

Mayor Turan: A marvelous project

Fatih Municipality Mayor Mehmet Ergün Turan highlighted the importance of ‘Let’s Teach Everyone How to Swim’ project and mentioned they observed that although students have many sports areas, they enjoy the pools the most.

Mayor Turan said, “Here is how you’ll understand whether a project is actually of use. When we came here, all the children here aged between 7 and 14 years said, “Hello uncle mayor, will you do the project next year too?”. The project works. In fact, 14-year-olds are asking “Will you do it also for 15-year-olds next year?”. Perhaps our ministry would like to raise athletes who will serve our country. Yet, our common purpose in these projects is to keep our children away from bad habits. This is a marvelous project. I’d like to thank to our Minister in particular. We took action quickly as our Minister commenced this project, but the ministry was just as fast”.
