Citizens were Treated with 15,000 Slices of Baklava in the Historical Eminönü Square

15,000 slices of baklava were offered to citizens in the historical Eminönü Square under the scope of ‘11th Historical Peninsula Baklava Festival’ held with the collaboration of various public institutions and non-governmental organizations in Istanbul.

‘11th Historical Peninsula Baklava Festival’ was organized in the historical Eminönü Square with the collaboration of Fatih Municipality, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ICOC) and Turkey's Baklava and Dessert Producers Foundation (BAKTAD). The festival was attended by former minister and Gaziantep Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin, Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan, Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Şekib Avdagiç, President of Turkey's Baklava and Dessert Producers Foundation Mehmet Yıldırım, Ak Party (The Justice and Development Party) Fatih District President Orhan Narin, presidents of many Non-Governmental Organizations who provided support for the festival, delegated persons from baklava producer companies and thousands of citizens.  

27 types of baklava were offered during the festival. Moreover, 4 masters who made it to the finals from among over 40 baklava masters across Turkey competed for the Golden Roller award. Yasin Karakaş, top winner of the contest was awarded 8 Cumhuriyet gold coins, second winner Yusuf Kurt was awarded 5 Cumhuriyet gold coins, third winner Davut Çam was awarded 3 and the fourth winner Musa Altunbaş was awarded 2 Cumhuriyet gold coins. Within the scope of the festival, the protocol offered 15,000 slices of baklava to the citizens. Furthermore, local musicians of Gaziantep gave a mini concert during the festival.

Holding a brief speech with the folks in the event, Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan said, “Cuisine is a major element in the formation and definition of culture. You can gain insight to a society’s historical experience if you take a look at its cuisine. Here we are together with local and foreign tourists in the Historical Eminönü Square. I’d like to thank to everyone attending this event”. 

Gaziantep Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin said, “Baklava is now registered by Europe as a Turkish confectionery product. We need to produce it more. We need to consume it more. We are going through a significant period. We need to have people taste all these delights”.

Istanbul Chamber of Commerce President Şekib Avdagiç mentioned that they will promote the taste and flavor of baklava, which is one of our traditional desserts to people in Istanbul and Turkey once again through this festival and thus ensure that baklava is exported more. President of Turkey's Baklava and Dessert Producers Foundation Mehmet Yıldırım said they are aiming to promote the Turkish Baklava to the world.
