Thousands of Fish Sandwiches to the Citizens in Fatih

Traditionally held every year in Fatih, Fatih Municipality Fish Festival began with colorful sights. Seafood was offered to 15,000 persons on the first day of the festival. Citizens lined up and made long queues to get their fish sandwich.

As the fish season began, the ‘Fatih Municipality Fish Festival’ organized with Fatih Municipality and KUMDER (Kumkapı Touristic Restaurants and Shopkeepers Solidarity Association) for the 15th time this year started in order to contribute to development of the fishing business and to increase fish consumption. Held in Kumkapı Square, the festival was attended by Ak Party (The Justice and Development Party) Istanbul Deputy Ahmet Hamdi Çamlı, Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan, Ak Party Fatih District President Orhan Narin, President of KUMDER Kemal Duranoğlu, Deputy Mayors, assembly members, representatives of sponsor companies and many citizens. Starting with the marching of the Ottoman Military Band, the festival continued with protocol speeches. After that, flower bouquets and plaques were presented on stage to the companies who contributed to the festival. Mayor M. Ergün Turan stood by the fish stall. Citizens who came hours earlier to get their fish sandwich made long queues. Citizens who were offered fish sandwiches were later offered halva too.

“Nationwide, we are praying as one”

Mentioning that they are praying nationwide for the soldiers taking part in the Operation Peace Spring (Operation Barış Pınarı), Fatih Municipality Mayor M. Ergün Turan said, “Held for the 15th time, the Fish Festival became a tradition in Fatih with the attendance of our citizens. Here we continue our festival with the shopkeepers of Kumkapı. Here we have enough fish to feed 15,000 persons. We have mackerel, anchovy, horse mackerel and squid. Hereby we extend our sincere regards and good wishes to our soldiers in Operation Peace Spring. May God bless them with strength and courage. Nationwide, we are praying as one. Our hearts are with our soldiers”.

Throughout the festival, mackerel for 8,000 persons, grilled gilt-head bream and bass for 2,500 persons, 2,500 servings of fried horse mackerel, 2,500 servings of fried anchovy, 2,500 servings of fried squid, 5,000 pieces of fish börek, şalgam suyu (turnip juice), lemonade and halva were offered to citizens. The festival, where a total of about 15,000 servings of seafood were offered was attended by many citizens. On the second day of the festival, an angling contest will be held on Galata Bridge. During the festival, contestants who catch the highest amount of fish will be given their awards with a ceremony.
