Mayor Turan Conducts On-Site Inspections with Technical Team Prior to Restoration Process Commencing at Şekerci Han

Mr. M. Ergün Turan, the Mayor of Fatih Municipality, conducted on-site inspections with technical teams at Şekerci Han to evaluate the restoration work that will commence following the expropriation process by the Istanbul Governorate and the Directorate General of Foundations.

A new revival process is beginning at Şekerci Han, one of the important milestones in the vision of preserving Fatih's historical heritage and passing it on to future generations in a robust manner. Mr. M. Ergün Turan, the Mayor of Fatih Municipality, conducted a detailed visit to Şekerci Han as part of the restoration preparations to be made following the completion of the expropriation works carried out by the Istanbul Governorate and the Directorate General of Foundations.

Şekerci Han, which holds a special place among the structures where Istanbul's centuries-old traditions of trade, culture and travel converge, embodies the living memory of the city with its architecture, inner courtyard and intricate details that reflect han culture. During the inspection, Mr. Turan discussed with expert teams the stonework, arch structures, passageways, and venue's integrity that reflect the han's original texture. This visit, where all aspects of the restoration steps to preserve the building's historical character were discussed, stood out as one of the most important stages of the preparation process.

Mr. Turan emphasised that Şekerci Han is one of the rare structures in Istanbul that keeps the han culture alive, stating, ‘This historical han was not just a place of accommodation or trade; it was a living space that left its mark on the city's memory when the paths of merchants, travellers, and people of culture and ideas crossed.’ He said that the role the han played in the past would be made visible again with the restoration.

Mr. Turan stated that the restoration process would be carried out meticulously, preserving all the historical layers of the structure, adding, "With the support of the Istanbul Governorate and following the expropriation efforts of the Directorate General of Foundations, we aim to restore every detail of Şekerci Han to its original state through the restoration work that will commence. We will restore this valuable structure to the city's cultural life without compromising its identity."

Mr. Turan described Şekerci Han as undergoing a ‘journey of revival,’ emphasising that this process is not merely the repair of a building but the restoration of a historical tradition. Once the restoration is complete, the han is expected to become a destination for local visitors, researchers, and cultural travellers alike.

Fatih Municipality is preparing to implement a transformation that will carry the historical identity of Şekerci Han to future generations, strengthen the cultural fabric of the region, and keep the city's memory alive.
