NALAS (Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe), formed by 16 local government associations, is an association that brings together local government associations in its own geography. It represents 9 thousand local governments and at the same time a population of 80 million people. By bringing together local government associations, elected representatives of local governments and experts of local governments, it supports the joint work between the local governments of the countries that are in the process of EU membership. Fatih Mayor M. Ergün Turan, who attended the general assembly representing MMU (Marmara Municipalities Union), which has been a full member of NALAS since 2008, and was elected as the 1st Deputy Chairman in the new term of NALAS and chaired the first meeting, said: “In line with my duty, I chaired the meeting on behalf of Turkey. NALAS is an important association that offers opportunities to share knowledge and experience between countries in terms of capacity building of local governments, ensuring international standards and managing the problems of local governments in accordance with local development goals. Turkey is one of the largest countries represented in the association in terms of local government, population and economic background. In this sense, our representation and influence in the association is valuable for the regional governments and people, and for us as well".
