The October 29 Republic Day was celebrated with a broad participation this year on Vatan Street, the traditional venue for celebrations in Istanbul. Mr. Davut Gül, the Governor of İstanbul, Mr. M. Ergün Turan, the Mayor of Fatih Municipality, the representatives of public institutions and citizens attended the ceremony organised to mark the 102nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic. Citizens filling the area with Turkish flags in their hands once again demonstrated their commitment to the fundamental values of the Republic.
The programme began with poems recited by students. The verses emphasising the meaning and importance of the Republic were listened to with interest by the participants. Folk dances and various performances then added colour to the celebrations. The military parade, performed with precise steps by military units, attracted great attention from the audience. Thus, both the struggles of the past were remembered and the determination to protect the present and future of the Republic was demonstrated.
In his speech at the ceremony, Mr. Turan said, ‘Happy 102nd anniversary of our Republic. Fatih has once again stood out today with its republican spirit.’ He emphasised that the Republic is not only a form of government but also a symbol of freedom, equality and common will.
Governor Gül also expressed his satisfaction with the 102nd anniversary of the Republic by joining the parade with citizens. Citizens accompanied the celebrations by waving flags and singing anthems.
The traditional Republic Day Parade on Vatan Street, held annually, brought together thousands of people from different age groups this year. Every segment of society, from children to the elderly, from students to veterans, took part in the parade. At the end of the parade, the anthems sung in unison strengthened the sense of unity and togetherness in the square.
The celebration held on Vatan Street not only commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the Republic but also served as a powerful reminder and consciousness carried from the past to the future. The necessity of preserving the values of the Republic and passing them on to future generations was felt at every stage of the ceremony.
